The gastronomic diversity of Hannover Region extends from haute cuisine to good plain cooking. It goes without saying that this city of trade fairs and congresses can offer an entire A to Z of international specialities.
Regional specialities
The traditional cuisine of Lower Saxony tends to be of a hearty and well-nourishing nature. One speciality is eel from the smoke-houses at Lake Steinhude. The classic autumn dish is grünkohl mit bregenwurst (kale with spicy sausages). Another regional favourite is schlachteplatte (a mixture of pressed meats and various sausages), preferably with hochzeitssuppe (“wedding soup”) as a starter. Welfenspeise (Guelph pudding) is a traditional dessert. The Burgdorfer Land to the north-east of Hannover is famous for its asparagus, a plentiful selection of which can be bought directly from the producers, or else in the Market Hall in Hannover or at one of the 60 weekly town and farmers’ markets held throughout the region.
Welcome, night owls
As the day dies in Hannover, the party scene awakens to life. In discotheques and clubs, in pubs, cocktail bars and all-night cafés, the rhythm is dictated by rock, house or hip-hop. In the evening you can move on in the direction of Raschplatz, where the “Osho”, the “MEC” and the “Palo Palo” dominate the scene. But nightlife is not restricted to the big city: the surrounding towns of Hannover Region also offer opportunities to party on into the early hours. Pubs and discos such as the “Farmers Inn” in Uetze, “Franco’s Disco” in Welze near Neustadt am Rübenberge or the “Brandente” in Burgdorf are among the cult nightlife addresses all around Hannover.
